Now is an exciting time for the Liberal Party. After an exhilarating leadership race, Justin Trudeau has already ignited the interest of thousands of Canadians: he has re-inspired former Liberals, united progressives from coast-to-coast-to-coast and brought those otherwise disenfranchised from the political system into the Liberal Party. Our growth in members, supporters and the turnout in the leadership race is a testament that Canadians are ready to change the channel on the Conservative government and on the NDP.

Justin’s message is clear: through hope and hard work, service to our communities, optimism, and compassion can we as Liberals defeat the Conservative government in 2015. Canadians are tired of the divisive politics practiced by the Conservatives and the NDP, pitting the West against the East, Quebec against Canada, the business community against the labour community.

Harper and Mulcair meticulously calculate the political gains of exploiting differences and disagreements in Canada’s political discourse to further their own political interests. But that’s not what Canadians want and that’s not what Liberals stand for.

Let’s build on Justin’s momentum so that he can be Canada’s next Prime Minister in 2015. Let’s show Canadians that the Liberal Party of Canada is the only positive alternative to Harper.

Young Liberal social event

On May 13, be part of the change. Join me, the YLCBC and Liberals in Vancouver Centre for an evening to socialize and meet other like-minded people in the city.

The Young Liberals of Canada in BC are gathering north of Nanaimo for an Executive Planning Retreat this weekend, and today the innovative new Young Liberal CORE Program was presented! Short for Campus Organizing, Recruitment, and Engagement, the new Young Liberal CORE Program will provide existing and new Liberal campus clubs with the core essentials needed to organize and engage new students on their campus. The Young Liberal executive is providing an initial $150 each to all campus clubs in BC to support the program and engage new students this fall.

CORE will provide easier access to the essentials like Membership forms and Supporter and contact forms as well with a constitution template and example policy resolutions. The Young Liberals will also provide central assistance in setting up all appropriate social media channels and starter web presence for any interested clubs.

Young Liberals in BC will also work to expand voter engagement leadership and support, ensuring that campus clubs are committed to data-oriented organizing. One of the most exciting new developments is that targeted and campus-specific Liberalist Access will now be offered to every Young Liberal campus club operating or starting up in BC, making it easier to track attendees and volunteers at events, to communicate with members and contacts, and to get better organized in the lead-up to the 2015 election. With specific turfs in the works for each campus, this aspect of the CORE program is the first of its kind in the Liberal Party.

Training is also set to expand, focusing on club set-up, micro-campaigns, event organization, Liberalist use, and accreditation (both with the institution and the Young Liberals of Canada). Full contacts lists for the Young Liberal Executive and all campus organizers will be shared to promote best practices heading into the fall, and the Young Liberal Executive will work with campus clubs over the coming months to develop new recruitment materials that build on last year’s successes with Liberal branded sunglasses, condoms and eco-friendly pens. Most recruitment materials will be finalized ahead of this year’s Camp Wanna Be Free, hosted on BC’s beautiful Lake Okanagan July 12-14.

This fall’s student recruitment campaign is crucial to the future of Canada’s Liberal movement, as the first major chance to engage a new generation of youth after the selection of Justin Trudeau as Liberal Leader. The Young Liberal’s new CORE program will help students across BC rally around his positive vision of hope and hard work for a better Canada, and together we’ll make Justin Trudeau our next Prime Minister!

For more updates on this weekend’s Young Liberal planning retreat in Parksville BC, follow along on twitter at @YoungLibs_BC or visit ylcbc.ca

For more information on the CORE program or to add your input, contact YLCBC President Justin Kaiser at Justin.kaiser@me.com or YLCBC Executive VP Adriano Lepore at a.lepore91@gmail.com

Located at cn.ylcbc.ca, the website is the first of its kind for the Young Liberals of Canada and one of the first Liberal Party of Canada websites to be fully translated into Chinese characters.

“With the leadership race coming to a close, the future of the federal Liberal Party will largely depend on how well we connect with and engage a new generation of diverse communities. Whether it’s taking on Harper’s exclusive immigration policies or standing up for young families trying to have their foreign credentials recognized, we’re reaching out to demonstrate that Liberals support and welcome the involvement of all Canadians, regardless of their cultural, linguistic, or ethnic background.” - Justin Kaiser, President of the Young Liberals of Canada in BC

For over a year, the Young Liberals of Canada in BC have been working relentlessly to expand Liberal outreach at major events such as Lunar New Year, Vaisakhi, and Latincouver, in addition to engagement on university and college campuses across BC.

“This website is one more important connection for that outreach, and we want young Canadians of all backgrounds to join us and get involved. The Liberal Party of Canada has a strong record of support for multiculturalism, human rights, and opportunity for all Canadians, and we’re working relentlessly to engage new youth in that vision and our party.” - Joe Bae, VP Organization of the Young Liberals of Canada in BC

“Chinese-Canadians have a rich history of contributions to the history of our country, and British Columbia has the largest-proportion of residents with Cantonese or Mandarin as their mother tongue of any province in Canada. It’s important that the Young Liberals and the Liberal Party as a whole become as open, accessible, and welcoming as possible in this critical period of renewal.” - Linda Ching, VP External of the Young Liberals of Canada in BC

The Young Liberals of Canada are also working on campuses across BC to engage diverse communities of students and to connect them with the Liberal Party.

“With the support of the Richmond Federal Liberal Association, we’re excited to be starting a new campus club at Kwantlen University, adding to the Liberal presence at UBC, UVic, SFU, UBC Okanagan, Thompson Rivers University, UNBC, and Langara College,” – Adriano Lepore, Executive Vice President of the Young Liberals of Canada in BC

We’ve committed to reaching out to new communities and demographics – and that’s exactly what we’re doing. Canada is one of the most diverse countries in the world and we’re taking strides to connect with people from coast to coast to coast. I’m happy to see this big step being taken in the right direction. – Farhan Mohamed, VP Communications of the Young Liberals of Canada in BC

YLCBC will continue to advocate for continued LPCBC funding for a Provincial Youth Director and Outreach Worker and have also updated the official logo for the organization to include Chinese and will have material in Chinese and other languages for future Young Liberal events.

Yesterday’s Conservative federal budget once again continues a pattern of inaction in the face of Canada’s most pressing challenges. This budget once again ignores Canada’s environment and the major challenges facing young and new Canadians – and we need you to get involved to help change that.

Canada’s staggering youth unemployment rate remains at almost 14% – that’s more than double the national average. This budget should have included a concrete plan for creating jobs and opportunity for the young, Aboriginal and new Canadians who have been hardest hit by this government’s economic inaction. Instead though, the Conservatives are focused on cuts for many of our society’s most vulnerable, re-allocating funds for politics’ sake, and spending on a collection of little gimmicks that won’t do a thing to create new jobs.

There almost 400,000 young Canadians who are actively searching for work every day, and the ‘Harper Government’ is failing every single one of them. Spending another $19 million over 2 years for partisan advertising is an appalling symbol of this government’s waste, while an entire generation of young people struggles to reach for new jobs and basic opportunity.

Alarmingly, this year’s budget also offers absolutely nothing to protect Canada’s environment or address the urgent challenge of climate change, and fails to make major investments in clean energy and transportation. $325 Million over 8 years to Sustainable Development Technology Canada is half of what was recommended for the more than 700 clean technology companies in Canada, and the vast majority of the government’s 10-year infrastructure plan is back-loaded to 2020 and beyond.

Young Canadians especially need a concrete and meaningful plan for job creation, skills training, and greater access to affordable education. Anything less simply builds on the failure, inaction, and disproportionately high youth unemployment rates of the last 7 years. We need a real plan to make housing more affordable and to meet urgent demand for transit infrastructure in cities and communities across Canada.

The Harper Government’s latest budget is just one more example of how seriously Canada needs change, an economy built on innovative ideas, sustainability and technology that isn’t ignorant of the challenges facing young and new Canadians. Together, let’s change Canada forever – Spread the word and get involved today!
